Spain – Officers were called to the apartment block in the Costa del Sol resort of Riviera del Sol near Fuengirola after a resident rang to say a fire extinguisher had been emptied inside the car it was reported on the 3 Sep 15. Bomb-disposal experts were alerted after police discovered weapons inside the BMW 4x4. Fire-fighters were also called and two hospitals put on standby in case of an explosion. The cache found in the boot included mortars, grenades and a Kalashnikov. The car had been parked in a garage underneath the block - near a golf course in an area popular with British holidaymakers - for around a month. Civil Guard officers removed the material before taking the grenades to a nearby quarry to detonate. The vehicle was later taken to a police pound for a thorough forensic examination after being checked for fingerprints. The spot where the drama occurred is near to the place where the body of a man was found in May three days after a shoot-out close by between drugs traffickers. Police sources said today they were keeping an open mind on the weapons find. They are thought to have ruled out the idea they belong to jihadi terrorists and are focusing on the theory they were left there by an organised criminal gang.
