Syria – Al-Qaeda's Syria branch on the 26 May 14 claimed responsibility for two car bomb attacks on the 25 May 14 in the central city of Homs that according to the governor killed 12 people. "God generously made it possible for the jihadists of Al-Nusra Front in Homs... to break through the strongholds of the regime's shabiha (militia)... despite the many obstacles, security barriers and checkpoints," the jihadist group said on Twitter. The statement also said the first car bomb was parked in the district of Zahraa, in eastern Homs, and the second in the west of the city. Both suicide car bomb attackers said the Al-Nusra Front, "Were detonated at the same time, in order to secure the highest death toll possible." Homs has seen some of the worst violence in Syria since the outbreak of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad that turned into a civil war.
Yemen – At least 27 people were killed in an overnight raid by dozens of al Qaeda militants on Yemeni government buildings and military posts in Seyoun, the second largest city in the south-eastern Hadramout province it was reported on the 24 may 14. The gunmen targeted the main military posts, the local police headquarters and bank branches and briefly captured some buildings before they withdrew the following day. Al Qaeda has conducted many hit-and-run attacks since the Yemeni army drove it from its strongholds in Abyan and Shabwa provinces. The militants arrived in 15 pickup trucks from desert areas outside Seyoun and proceeded to attack various government buildings. "They wanted to capture the city and control it," the official claimed.
