Switzerland – An election was held in the Swiss canton of Ticino as to whether the face veil
often worn by Muslim females should be banned. Two thirds of the voters voted in favour of
the ban and it was hoped that the verdict would send a message to Islamist fundamentalists
that those who wished to integrate were welcome irrespective of their religion. It was also
stated that those who rebuff the Swiss values and aimed to build a parallel society based on
religious laws and place those values over the existing ones were not welcome. There are
approximately 400, 000 Muslims living in Switzerland about 5% of the population. In 2009
voters backed a ban on constructing new minarets. France was the first country in Europe
to ban the full face veil in public with Belgium following suit in 2010. Although this is seen
as a stand for the nationalist values of the country it will no doubt be a concern for the future
especially for allowing home grown terrorism with a grievance against the ban.
