11 Sep 2001 – United States: Four hijacked passenger planes were used as aerial bombs against prominent locations in the United States. Two were deliberately flown into the World Trade Centre in New York; one was flown into the Pentagon; the forth was crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA. Nearly three thousand were killed. Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda were responsible.
